Chaos Engine

From Estonia, of all places!, comes a Blackened Extreme Metal band with a weird and certainly appealing twist. For this foursome's (comprised of vocalist/ lead guitarist & electronics man Draconic, rhythm guitarist Gates, bassist Benton, and drummer Suss) music has a definitely hypnotic effect, especially to those among us taking the trouble to delve deeper into apparently repetitive melodies, to find out about the subtle and delicious nuances of the fast played notes. Formed in 1998, in the Estonia town of Tallinn, the band delivers an impressive follow-up album to 2000's debut "Viimanegi Veri". "The Principle" opens the album with electronics and effect-distorted vocals, and has sinisterly atmospherical & soundscapish keyboards interconnecting the opener with the 3 following songs, an effect repeated again later in the album, interconnecting the dark and moody instrumental "Crystal" with the song "Devilchant" (which also has a Doomy flavour in passages). There's some ossasional & rare cleaner vocals, but overall those are definitely Blackened screams. Just under 38 minutes long in total, the 8 tracks are a raging torrent that deserves the attention of any Black Metal officionato! And since the album was already released in 2003, this is actually a catch-up review (even if the album was only now put under our attention by Belgium's premium promotion house Hardebaran. Wonderful job those people are doing, really!), but since you're possibly only able to get it over here right now, you haven't lost that much time. Hope the band comes along with a new album a bit quicker next time!

89/100
