Echosilence
Distorted Horizon

'Distorted Horizon' is an EP with four songs of the Tallinn (Estland) based band Echosilence. It was released in August 2005 and now this disc has found its way to our offices too. You immediately hear that we are dealing with skilled musicians. Three of them played in the death metal outfit Decease before forming Echosilence in 1996. You see, experienced musicians and this is evident when listening to the progressive metal one can find on 'Distorted Horizon'.

Three of the four songs have a length of six minutes, only the title track is still longer. In the first song 'Views On Views' we already learn that Echosilence cannot be put in one pigeonhole. Influences from ambient and progressive music are blend in a fluent way, only a pity that they recruited a female vocalist. This Kadri sings with a fairylike voice and of course, this changes the band's global sound drastically. 'Distant Horizon' with its nine minutes length suffers from way too much vocals to remain exciting, in spite of any flirts in a jazzy and alternative direction. Fortunately they do not make the same mistake in 'Information Intoxication' and I enjoyed listening to the instrumental parts of this song. Concerning guitar skills, Echosilence has a quite heavy sound, just listen to the last song 'Human Animal' which includes better distorted vocals I prefer above these calm, solemn vocals in the other tracks. One can find lots of atmosphere in this song and the quality of recordings and production of this mini CD is excellent. Music-wise it is engrossing, but you have to like the vocals, otherwise it soon annoys.
