Nihilistikrypt
Treats From the Underground

Interview by Burt Wolf with vocalist Orc, guitarist Uziel, bassist Doomhand & drummer Ken of the band NIHILISTIKRYPT. Interview done 6-9-07.

CAN YOU GIVE SOME OF THE BANDS HISTORY UP TO THIS POINT? ANY PREVIOUS BANDS MEMBERS WERE IN BEFORE?

ORC: NIHILISTIKRYPT was formed by Uziel (currently also in CATAFALC & GORESOERD) & Sorts in summer 2004 after their other band IGNORABIMUS split up. Soon after Doomhand (previously in IRDHING) joined on bass. Orc from ECTHALION was invited in the beginning of 2005 to do the vocals. There have been two previous drummers, but Ken, our current blasting machine joined on January 2006, he plays also in SPITBLOOD & GORESOERD. NIHILISTIKRYPT released demo "REQUIRED SACRIFICES" in 2005, which was recieved good, but still lacked something to make it very good & special. We also gave about 10 live performances during this period.
UZIEL: Now we've parted ways with one of the founding members Sorts & NIHILISTIKRYPT remains as a four piece fast & furious blasting machine. We are playing considerably faster & more brutal Death Metal than we ever played before (even compared to the songs we played between the demo & last line up change. After that we rearranged the songs to suite our new style. So, in conclusion, there are now 8 songs, which will never be heard or recorded in their previous form again. There's no room for melodies anymore. There is just inexorable & severe blasting with down to guts growling.

YOU RECENTLY ACQUIRED A NEW DRUMMER KEN. HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH HIM? WHY DID YOU RECENTLY DECIDE TO GO WITH ONE GUITARIST?

UZIEL: Well, I went to the bar with Doomahnd, where Ken worked at the time as a bartender & asked him if he would like to join our band. The day before I ordered a coffee from him & as I was displeased with it, I had to say that this isn't coffee, it is a dish washing leftover. The idea to ask him came from Sorts. As to Sorts, we just developed musically into completely different moods & methods. Besides, last few months had shown that in our case, 1 guitar is enough.

WHY WAS THE NAME NIHILISTIKRYPT CHOSEN AS THE BANDS NAME?

ORC: It was pretty hard for Uziel & Sorts to come up with original name, but NIHILISTIKRYPT described music & conception of the band. It was nihilistic, misanthropic & hateful lyrically, describing dark themes from deepest crypts of their mind, the things happening around & bothering them. The name characterized also the music, which was dark, unexpected & evil.
DOOMHAND: In the beginning I didn't like the name at all. But for now I don't imagine any other name at all.
UZIEL: Nowadays, we are considering an imago change & even maybe changing the name, although it's really hard to give up well promoted & well known (in Estonia scene) name. Well, I see one person who is against changing the name :) Ok, let's forget it.

WHO OR WHAT HAS HAD SOME INFLUENCE ON YOU IN YOUR LIFE & IN MUSIC?

ORC: Life itself.
UZIEL: Beer. Overworking. Ham. Ugly people. Stupid People. Ken's monstrous laziness.

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE SOUNDS OF NIHILISTIKRYPT?

UZIEL: If you mean the new NIHILISTIKRYPT. In that case, how would you describe the pain, which an enormous auger (working at full speed) in your anus would cause?

YOUR CD "REQUIRED SACRIFICES" CAME OUT IN 2005. HOW WELL HAS IT DONE IN THE UNDERGROUND SCENE?

ORC: It was received well & had mostly positive reviews, but still it was missing something to make it stand out from the others & to get a label deal for example.
UZIEL: At present we consider it a pretty good first step, but we have to admit, it lacks of power, aggressiveness & is so goddamn slow.
KEN: I'll be honest. It's a piece of crap. I joined the band after I heard their new stuff.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE COVER ART A LITTLE & WHO DID IT?

ORC: It was done by one of the best local artists Luix (www.LUIX.com).
UZIEL: Why should we describe it - take a look at the picture & all is clear.

WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL CONTENT IN YOUR SONGS? WHO WRITES THE MAJORITY OF THE MUSIC?

UZIEL: The basis of music comes from me, the final musical output depends 100% on the others opinions & suggestions for rearrangement. Ok, sometimes, pretty rarely though, I change some riffs as well. I don't write much lyrics any more. At first, I have nothing to say. Secondly, for me the vocal (especially growling) is just an instrument. i just come out with some stupid song names & let Orc do the lyric work. But of course, there are few exceptions. For instance, the lyrics of one new song "Perverse Dark Somnolence" was written by all of us. Each verse describes most gory, brutal or perverse dream of every band member.
KEN: Sometimes it seems he writes 250 bpm songs on purpose to piss me off or give me a fucking heart attack. I usually just keep whining until Uziel agrees to change some of the riffs & even add some grooves & breakdowns for variety. The new stuff basically (fortunately) has nothing in common with the demo CD.
ORC: The lyrics are mostly about stuff that has happened in real life or that bothers us. So I just amplify the idea, add some brutality to it & fit the lyrics with the music.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE NIHILISTIKRYPT SONG & WHY?

DOOMHAND: In the beginning every song is the favorite song because it has it's good & very good riffs. After awhile only some very best ones keep staying. As an almost new song I like much now also "Hydrogenic Mutants".
ORC: "Sane Insanity" - it beats the shit out of me. From our demo album "I Hate Everything", because I Hate Everything.
UZIEL: Like Doomhand said, usually the newest one is my favorite, cause it's fresh, like a virgin. As far as today, I think that "Sane Insanity" (you'll be able to hear it soon, after we release our new demo) is my best achievement. It's so fucking intensive & fast, like shooting a machine gun for 3 minutes & 14 seconds consecutively. Still, I do have some cards in my sleeve...yet unstudied or unfinished.
KEN: The brutality & speed of our new songs is growing beyond all expectations I had when joining the band. So far I like "Sane Insnaity" best though.

YOU RECENTLY DID AN OFFICIAL VIDEO SHOOT. WHICH SONG IS IT FOR & DESCRIBE THE VIDEO A LITTLE BIT? WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE?

ORC: It was for the song "Manunkind" (which is released on a split vinyl with CATAFALC). The experience was pretty fun & cool, but I won't go into the details of the video, since the one responsable for it lost some footage later (a server crash) & it will never see the daylight. But, hey, we didn't have to pay for the making of this clip so nothing off of our backs & the trip was fun.

ARE THERE ANY LABELS SHOWING INTERESTS IN NIHILISTIKRYPT?

ORC: No, just the usual responses, you're pretty good, but we're currently not looking for new bands.
UZIEL: Vice versa, as summer is almost here, we are showing more & more intensive perverse interest in BEER LABELS at stores.

IS THERE ANY NEWER MATERIAL WRITTEN FOR YOUR NEXT RELEASE YET?

UZIEL: Sure, we have enough noise for 1.5 LPs & the generators are unstoppable. Yet, we don't rush to record it, since it is financially pointless to record & release a full length album bu ourselves. Instead we're about to enter studio in a few months (maybe sooner, maybe later) & record a demo of 3 ass kicking tracks & start re-promoting ourselves to get a record deal.

DO YOU GUYS PLAY OUT A LOT? WHERE ARE SOME OF THE PLACES YOU'VE PLAYED. WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH?

UZIEL: Yes, we play a lot with ourselves, hehehe, especially the drummer.
KEN: Haha...bastard.
ORC: The highlights would be Conquer Festival 2005 in Poland (with CHRIST AGONY, AZARATH, NOCTA, AGABUS, ADULTERY, etc.) It was awesome since it was the second live performance for NIHILISTIKRYPT ever. We've also supported ROTTING CHRIST in Tallinn & performed in Hard Rock Laager 2006 (with SATYRICON, TIAMAT, DECAPITATED etc.)

WHAT IS THE SCENE LIKE IN ESTONIA? WHO ARE SOME OF THE BETTER BANDS OR LABELS IN YOUR COUNTRY?

UZIEL: http://www.estoniametal.com says it all. In short, we have everything here. And you should check out http://www.nailboard.org
ORC: The scene is getting stronger with each year & more & more world famous artist visit Estonia. Special thanks for that Hard Rock Club (http://hardrockclub.ee)

ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU HAVE CURRENTLY BEEN LISTENING TO?

UZIEL: Likes R&B & Gospel music & listens to this shit every fucking day...grin. ATHOS, PORTHOS, BEHEMOTHOS!!!
DOOMHAND: I recently descovered again a band called BESEECH. Sometimes I like to listen to some softer music, it gives good ideas.
ORC: Mostly Death metal (the latest SUFFOCATION album is kickass!), but sometimes softer bands like PAIN, PARADISE LOST, TIAMAT, etc.
KEN: Metalcore, Deathcore & Death Metal. For passive moods Funeral Doom Metal & dark ambient. Otherwise almost anything goes, Trance, Hip-Hop, Soft Rock, etc. What I do hate is Country & Folk music.

WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND DO WHEN NOT DOING ANY WORK FOR THE BAND? JOBS, HOBBIES, ETC?

UZIEL: Fucking working almost every day. Go fisihing. Drinking.
KEN: University & gym.
ORC: I spend most of my day behind computer due to my work. On my spare time I play with my son or hang out with friends.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU EVER WENT TO? WHAT WAS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU EVER BOUGHT?

DOOMHAND: My first concert was in 1990 when in Tallin performed Sweden band called CHARISMA. It was very cool experience. I was only ten years old then. So I can't exactly say it has had affected me later positively or negatively. My first album was probably from some shitty Estonian Disco band.
UZIEL: I don't remember. Seriously. My first gig with a band (CATLAMAYA) was somewhere in 1992. First CD I bought CARCASS - "SWANSONG". Before that, mostly illegal tapes were sold here. I don't really remember what kind of crap I have bought.
KEN: I got into Metal when I was about 15. Uziel & Sorts started drinking & playing music together when I was 2 years old. But I guess the first kick ass experience I had was SLIPKNOT in Helsinki. The first Metal album I bought was ROB ZOMBIE - "THE SINISTER URGE".

WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?

DOOMHAND: It's a fucking difficult one. Do you mean with "about you" the band or us seperately? If you take me for example, then maybe it is very surprising how fucking lazy I could be sometimes. But when you ask the question about the band, then I guess we are a bunch of usual perverts... hehe.
KEN: LOL...yeah, we're a bunch of sick fucks.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MISCONCEPTIONS OF LIFE IN ESTONIA?

UZIEL: I have no idea about what people abroad think of life in Estonia. So, I can't confirm or deny anything. If you gave me some examples, I might be able to tell which is true, which is not. (On the other hand, for instance in Russian jokes Estonians are considered very slow & pretty stupid. Well, the slow thing might apply for ones living in the country. But sure is, that Estonians are one of the best educated nations in the world. And we, NIHILISTIKRYPT, are a living proof for not being slow. :) The other thing they say - there are shitloads ( a really fucking lot) of beautiful women here. Well, that's a lie. The truth is that we have much less ugly woman here than other countries do. :p

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU GUYS NEXT?

DOOMHAND: We're rolling on. As said before, we plan to release a demo with 3 songs, make some live performances & collect some good contacts for the future & certainly we'll have to practice more to play even more technically & faster in the future.
ORC: Yeah, & we don't want to be just another band, we aim higher. So we just keep grinding.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS INTERVIEW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW THAT IT'S OVER?

DOOMHAND: I just had an hour ago rehearsal with NIHILISTIKRYPT, it was pretty good over a few weeks. I go sleep over a long time now.
UZIEL: I have answered this interview for almost 3 weeks during lunch time. So, my answer is working.

THANX FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER THIS INTERVIEW. IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO ADD FEEL FREE TO DO SO.

DOOMHAND: Use condoms & keep supporting Death Metal.
UZIEL: Keep on supporting beer factories - your country needs your money!
KEN: No pain = no gain. Take care of yourselves!
